Loyalist Book Reprinted: An Island Refuge (posted August 4, 2009)

An Island Refuge: A history of the United Empire Loyalist settlement on the Island, their family histories, the regiments, Muster Rolls and Claimants List. An excellent reference for those researching their UEL ancestors, as it includes many Loyalist lineages, claimant's lists, and muster rolls for those Loyalists who settled on St. John's Island (Prince Edward Island).

The PEI UELA book has been reprinted and updated finally after being sold out for the past 9 years. The original 1983 printing of 4000 copies sold out in 2000. The original printing plates had been lost, so later that year, the Island Register and its users began a transcription project to put the book into computer format so that the book could be reprinted and updated. Sadly, the old format was very unfriendly towards reprints and updating.

The book now is available and may be ordered on-line from:
http://www.islandregister.com/booksad.html#air
or
http://www.islandregister.com/uel.html

Price (August 2009):
$40 Canadian plus a $14.70 shipping and handling charge.

All proceeds go to the Abegweit Branch, UEL Association.

Now, in its new format, new printings will be able to be accomplished in a couple of months, so we should be able to keep the book available from now on with only short delays between printings.

Publication of Vital Statistics From Cape Breton Newspapers 1901-1912 (Posted October 11, 2008)

The first volume in a new 3 volume series of  Vital Statistics from Cape Breton Newspapers  has been published. Volume 1 covers the period 1901-1912. Subsequent volumes to be published will cover 1913-1922 and 1923-1932. These publications will fill the gap between a series of publications covering the nineteenth century by Mildred Howard and my series of Obituaries from the Sydney Post-Record covering the years 1933-1956.

The three volumes in the series include extracts of obituaries/deaths, marriages and births found in the various surviving newspapers that were published on Cape Breton Island during that time period. The publications include Sydney Daily Post, Sydney Record, Glace Bay Gazette, North Sydney Herald, Richmond County Record, Bras d Or Gazette, Sydney Mines Star, Inverness News, Hawkesbury Bulletin and others. Due to the number of entries it has been divided into three volumes.

Each death entry includes the following information:  surname, given names, date of death, place of death, date and place of burial (when known), limited biographical information to assist in identification of the individual, and the dates and pages of the newspapers in which it appeared. A maiden name cross-reference was also prepared and incorporated into the main body of the index to assist the researcher in finding married female lines. Each marriage entry includes bride s name, groom s name, date and place of marriage, parents  names (if given), officiating minister (if given), some brief biographical information and the dates and pages of the newspapers in which it appeared as well as separate bride and groom surname indexes. Each birth entry includes family name, date of birth (if given), parents  names, sex (child s name was not usually provided) and the dates and pages of the newspapers in which it appeared.

Volume 1, 1901-1912,  is 423 pages and contains over 5500 deaths, 2700 marriages and 1000 births.
Volume 1 sells for $30.00, or $40.00 (CDN or US) by mail, postage included. Please note: A cheque or money order is required in advance prior to shipping.

Grass Roots of Lunenburg - Plagiarized Book (Posted May 25, 2008)

Dr. Ken Paulsen was in Nova Scotia this week on vacation and by chance in a book store found a new book titled "Grass Roots of Lunenburg: Cultural Change, Adaptation, and Continuity" by Roger Demone.  When Ken took a closer look at the book, he was horrified to discover that the contents were for the most part his own 1996 doctoral dissertation, word for word.  He contacted the printer, a vanity press in the USA, and through them Demone and, after legal advice, he requested that the ISBN be withdrawn and that ALL copies including electronic be collected and destroyed.  Roger has handed over about 2/3rd of the print run.

As you may know, Dr. Paulsen has generously deposited copies of his dissertation at the South Shore Genealogical Society in Lunenburg, Archives & Records Management in Halifax and other NS locations.  He even gave a copy to Demone sometime ago when he was a history teacher who requested it for use in the classroom.

If you respect the work of Ken Paulsen (and the laws of Canada and the United States!) and have purchased a copy of "Grass Roots of Lunenburg", I urge you to do the right thing and send the book to Ken (contact info through his webpage: http://genealogy-paulsen.com/).  To get your money back you will have to go after Roger Demone, who can probably be reached through the Lunenburg Heritage Society, or I have his address.

95,000 Records Added to NSHVS website (Posted May 12, 2008)

Another 95,000 new possibilities in searching for your Nova Scotia roots!  ‘Delayed birth registrations’ for 95,000 people born in Nova Scotia between 1836 (the earliest date we’ve found) and 1907 have  been indexed, digitized in their entirety, and are now available as part of the Nova Scotia Historical Vital Statistics Website.

These records are for individuals born in the years when civil registration was not mandatory, but who nevertheless wanted or later needed an official record of their birth. When modern record-keeping began in 1908, the ‘delayed’ or ‘late’ registration option for births was put in place and continued for many years.

Many of these ‘late’ registrations included additional information submitted to support the application, including family Bible extracts, census abstracts and copies of church-register entries. Up to four pieces of supporting evidence sometimes accompanied a single registration form.  Everything in each of the 95,000 files has been digitized - registration form plus all supporting documents - and the results (193,000 images) have been incorporated into NSHVSO.

Pennfield Parish Military Historical Society Opens its Doors (Posted November 29, 2007)
Since January 26, 2007, Chris Larsen has been researching the history of the former WWII Air Station at Pennfield Ridge, NB and the former army training grounds (Camp Utopia) at Utopia, NB. Due to an ever-increasing interest in both of these former military bases and our veterans in general, he decided to form the “not-for-profit” society, “Pennfield Parish Military Historical Society Ltd.” to help further preserve the rich military history of this area.

The purpose of this society is to discover, procure, collect, preserve, display and interpret material of historical value associated with the area and to work with other organizations that have similar goals. The Beaver Harbour Community Venture Ltd., located at 18 Quaker Lane in Beaver Harbour, has agreed to provide space in their archives so a display of artifacts, material, etc. can be made available to the public and further raise awareness of the sacrifices of the servicemen and women. They are well on their way to achieving their goal and anyone with any information on local servicemen and women from Pennfield Parish, information on the former Air Station and Camp Utopia, photographs, artifacts or memories to share please feel free to contact Chris Larsen at 260 Main Street E, Beaver Harbour, NB, E5H 1K4; (506) 754-2323 or (506) 456-2145; www.pennfieldparishmilitary.com or e-mail pennfieldparish@yahoo.com
